Clemson Rowing Competes in Day One of Lexus South/Central Region Sprints

CLEMSON, SC — The Clemson rowing team battled through severe weather in the first day of racing at the 2003 Lexus South/Central Region Sprints in Oak Ridge, TN on Lake Melton. The Tigers will advance to the Grand Finals of the First Varsity 4+ and Second Novice 8+, while the First Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 4+ and First Novice 8+ will move on to the Petite Finals tomorrow.

The First Varsity 8+ took third (6:37.7) in its first heat of the day to advance to the A/B Semifinal 1. Finishing with a time of 6:44.6 and taking sixth in the A/B Semifinal, the First Varsity 8+ will advance to the Petite Finals in Sunday’s competition.

The Second Varsity 8+ finished with a time of 7:01.1, taking sixth in its preliminary heat to move on to the repechage 2. It finished fifth in this event in 7:02.6 and will compete tomorrow in the Second Varsity 8+ Petite Final.

Clemson rowing’s First Varsity 4+ had an impressive day of racing taking second in the preliminary heats in 7:20.7. It advanced to the Seminfinal 1 where the Tigers finished second to Michigan in 7:23.4. The First Varsity 4+ will compete in the Grand Finals on Sunday.

Finishing fourth in its event, the Second Varsity 4+ advanced to the Repechage 1 with a time of 6:49.6. The Tigers finished in sixth place (7:58.7) and will race in the Petite Final tomorrow.

In the last group to race for the day, the First Novice 8+ rowed to a third place finish (6:50.5) in preliminaries to move on to the Semifinal 2. There, the Tigers took sixth in 6:56.8 and will advance to the Petite Finals of Sunday’s events.

Sunday’s events will kick-off at 9am with the First Varsity 8+ Grand Finals.
