Clemson Men’s Track And Field Team Wins Clemson Invitational

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson men’s track and field team captured the Clemson Invitational on Saturday behind event wins from Ronald Richards, Rashad Gardner, Adam Linkenauger, George Kitchens and Jason Bell. The Tigers accrued 180 points to win the meet, while Georgia placed second with 138.33 points and Alabama finished third with 130.33 points. Georgia Tech amassed 115.33 points for fourth place, Virginia Tech was fifth (72 points) and Howard placed sixth with 42 points. Western Carolina finished seventh with 40 points and East Tennessee State rounded out the field with 13 points.

On the track, Ronald Richards tied his season-best mark of 10.24 en route to a win in the 100m dash, while Rashad Gardner time of 14.35 was good for a fifth-place finish. Three Tigers swept the 400m hurdles with regional qualifying times, as Gardner captured the event with a time of 51.51. Roy Cheney placed third with his time of 52.18. In the 3000m steeplechase, Sean Reilly and Matt Pimentel placed second and fifth with times of 9:28.14 and 9:52.96, respectively. The Tigers’ 4x100m relay team of Cheney, Richards, Sheats and Kitchens posted a regional qualifying time of 40.37 to finish second in the event. The Tigers’ top 4x400m relay team of Richards, Cheney, Gardner and Kautz finished third with a time of 3:11.10.

Adam Linkenauger returned to competition in his first outdoor meet of the season with a regional qualifying clearance of 6’11.75″ to win the high jump competition. In the pole vault, Mitch Greeley recorded a clearance of 16’2.75″ to place third in that event. George Kitchens recorded a mark of 24’6.25″ to win the long jump and qualify for the East Region Championships, and Jason Bell won the triple jump with a regional qualifying mark of 51’5.75″ and moved into third on the Tigers all-time list. Derek Gilson scored in the discus throw with a fifth-place finish and mark of 163’10”, and Danny Alge placed fourth with a regional qualifying mark of 184’0″ in the hammer throw. Alge’s mark ranks third on the Tigers’ all-time list. Brandon Holmes recorded a personal-best mark of 187’4″ in the javelin throw to place fourth.
