Clemson Men’s Track and Field Team Opens Outdoor Season

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson men’s track and field team opened its outdoor season this weekend at the Georgia Relays and the Charlotte 49ers Classic.

At the 49ers Classic, Ato Modibo provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships as he won the 400m dash with a time of 46.02. Jacey Harper finished second in the 100m dash with a time of 10.43, and Harper also won the 200m dash in 20.96. Matt Thompson placed sixth in the 400m dash with a time of 58.58. Mike Connelly was fourth in the 800m with a time of 1:55.17 and fifth in the 1500m run (3:55.71). Garrick Copes also competed in the 800m, finishing fifth with a time of 1:55.48. Jason Meany won the 5k run with at time of 14:27.63, while Scott Shaw and Travis Alexander finished eighth (14:52.61) and 11th (15:09.11), respectively. In the 110m hurdles, Todd Matthews was second with a time of 13.92 while Ian Potter finished third with a time of 14.33. Shauntae Lovings placed sixth with a time of 14.98. Tony Washington posted a second place finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.75. Clemson’s 4x100m relay team finished third with a time of 41.49 and the 4x400m relay teams finished first (3:13.06) and sixth (3:24.19). In the long jump, Kai Maull was fifth (22’10 1/2″), Brit Barrow was 12th (21’1 1/4″), and Tony Lloyd was 17th (20’3″). Barrow also finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 47’9″.

At the Georgia Relays, Doug Ameigh finished second in the high jump with a mark of 6’10 1/4″ while Terrance McDaniel and Bryant Howe tied for third (6’8″). McDaniel also recorded a second place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 46’9″. Benjamin Hess finished third in the pole vault, clearing 16’2 3/4″ and Andy Giesler was fourth with a mark of 15’9″. Matt Lombardi finished second in the shot put with a mark of 48’8″ and Andy Giesler was fourth with a mark of 45’11 1/4″. David Schenek recorded a mark of 155’3″ for a sixth place finish in the discus and he also finished sixth in the hammer with a mark of 168’8″. Brett Varner finished seventh in the hammer with a mark of 167’2″.

Clemson will be in action next Saturday, Mar. 24, as the Tigers host the Clemson Relays.
