Clemson Men’s Tennis Will Open 2011 Season Saturday

Jan. 14, 2011

CLEMSON, SC–The Clemson men’s tennis team will open the 2011 season on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. as the Tigers will play host to Wofford. Later in the afternoon, Clemson will entertain Presbyterian at 3:00 p.m.

Both matches will be played in the Clemson Indoor Tennis facility at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.

The Tigers will have five starters returning as Derek DiFazio, Kevin Galloway, Wes Moran, and Juan Bolona are back this season. Head Coach Chuck McCuen will begin his third season as the head mentor of the Tigers.

Both Wofford and Presbyterian are historical opponents for the Tigers as Clemson began playing both schools in the 1920s. Although the Tigers began tennis over 100 years ago by entering the state tournament, Clemson’s first dual match ever was against Wofford on April 28, 1921 in Spartanburg. The Tigers won a singles match and a doubles match and claimed a 2-0 win over the Terriors. The next season, Wofford defeated Clemson 2-1 at Clemson on April 29, 1922.

Clemson and Presbyterian first began playing one another on April 22, 1926 as the Tigers defeated the Blue Hose 4-2 in Clinton, SC.
