Clemson Looks for Sixth in a Row at Wolfpack Spring Open

Clemson, S.C.—Clemson’s hectic schedule continues this weekend when the Tigers compete in the Wolfpack Spring Open at Lonnie Poole Golf Club in Raleigh, N.C. It is the second of three consecutive weekend tournaments for Larry Penley’s program, the first time Clemson has played three consecutive weeks in the month of April since 1997.

N.C. State and retiring head coach Richard Sykes will serve as hosts of the event at the par 71 course.   Clemson is the highest rated team in the field with a No. 14 rating, while Duke is the second highest rated squad with a No. 19 ranking.

The 15 teams will play 54 holes over two days beginning on Friday, April 14. The teams will play 36 holes on Friday and 18 on Saturday.   This will be Clemson’s third appearance at the Wolfpack Spring Open. The Tigers finished third in 2013 and second in 2014.

Clemson has won a school record five consecutive tournaments, and has six wins for the academic year, most in the nation, one more than Florida’s five wins.

The current Clemson team has tied the school record for total tournament wins in a season. The 2002-03 Clemson team also won six, including the National Championship.

The Tigers won the Clemson Invitational last weekend with a six-under-par score of 858. It marked he fifth straight tournament that Clemson has scored under par and the Tigers are 85-under for those five tournaments combined.

Carson Young will play the No. 1 position for the Tigers and he has played his best golf of late. For the first time in his career, Young has four consecutive top 10 finishes, including his first college win at Furman and a second place finish at the Clemson Invitational. Young has scored under par in five consecutive tournaments.

Doc Redman has a streak of five straight top six finishes, including a victory at the Ka’anapali Classic in Hawaii in November when he shot a Clemson record 198. He finished fourth at Furman and sixth at the Clemson Invitational. His 70.15 stroke average leads the Tigers and ranks 20th in the nation.   Redman can set the Clemson freshman mark for top 10 finishes if he gets a top 10 at Raleigh.

Bryson Nimmer is ranked 47th in the latest Golfstat rankings, second behind Redman’s No. 22 rating. Nimmer ha a 70.93 stroke average, and has five top 10 finishes.

Austin Langdale will be a second Clemson senior in the lineup this weekend. HIs third round in Raleigh will be the 100th of his career. Langdale has had two top 10 finishes in his last three events, including third place at the Clemson Invitational last weekend.

William Nottingham will be the fifth player in the Clemson lineup this weekend. The freshman has a 73.57 stroke average and a pair of top 10 finishes.
