Clemson is No. 2 National Seed for NCAA Tournament, Hosts Second Round Match Sunday

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson men’s soccer team was selected as the No. 2 National Seed for the 2015 NCAA Tournament, as announced by the NCAA on Monday afternoon. The Tigers have a first-round bye, and will host the winner of the Nov. 19 contest between Elon and Winthrop in the NCAA Second Round on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. This is the second-straight year that Head Coach Mike Noonan’s Tigers have earned a top-eight national seed, as the team was the seventh-seeded team in the field in 2014.

This will be Clemson’s 29^th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament, which puts the program in ninth place nationally in terms of all-time NCAA appearances. Clemson has a 48-25-2 all-time record in the NCAA Tournament, and, with its 48 wins in tournament play, is sixth in NCAA Tournament history in that category. The Tigers have reached the NCAA College Cup seven times in program history. Two of those seasons, 1984 and 1987, Clemson won the national title. In the 2014 NCAA Tournament, after earning a first-round bye, the Tigers defeated Coastal Carolina 2-1 in the Second Round, before falling to North Carolina 2-1 in the Round of 16.

The Tigers are 15-2-2 on the season, and advanced to the ACC Tournament Semifinals before falling to Syracuse on Wednesday, Nov. 11 by a score of 2-0. The Orange went on to win the ACC Championship with a 1-0 road victory over Notre Dame on Sunday, Nov. 15. Clemson currently ranks in the top nine in the nation in six scoring categories – fourth points per game (6.63), fifth in scoring offense (2.26), sixth in total assists (40), seventh in total points (126), eighth in assists per game (2.11) and ninth in total goals (43). The team finished the 2015 regular season with a 14-1-2 overall record, which was the first time since 2001, and just the 13^th time overall, that the team has won at least 14 games during the regular season.

Clemson is one of seven teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference in the tournament field for 2015, the most teams from any conference. Five of the top-seven seeds in the country are from the ACC, as Wake Forest earned the No. 1 seed, followed by the Tigers at No. 2, North Carolina at No. 5, Syracuse at No. 6 and Notre Dame at No. 7.
