Clemson in Second Place at Greenville Regional Preview

Clemson, S.C.—Clemson stands in second place out of 16 teams near the end of the second round of the Greenville Regional Preview at Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville, NC.    Play was halted due to darkness with Clemson at 30-over-par with four holes left in the second round.

Clemson shot a 307 on the par 72 course in the first round and stood in third place behind TCU.     Alice Hewson and Sydney Legacy had first round scores of 76 on the difficult course that played to an average score of 80 for the 92 players in the first round.  Ana Paula Valdes had an opening round 77 and junior Marisa Messana had a 78 in the first round.

So far in the second round, Hewson and Valdes stand at one over par through 14 and 15 holes respectively.  The one over par score is tied for the second best second round in progress in the entire field.  Both young Clemson players had jumped into the top 10 when darkness halted play.  Hewson is currently in sixth place at five-over-par and Valdes, a freshman, is in ninth place at six-over-par.

Legacy was five-over-par through 15 holes in her second round and stands in 20th place individually.  Messana is four-over through 14 in her second round and is 10-over-par for the tournament, good enough for 25th place.

“It was a pretty long day and we didn’t quite get all 36 holes in,” said Head Coach Kelley Hester.  “Scores were high for everyone as the greens were lightening fast and undulating.  I told the girls the course was playing at a par 75 instead of 72.”

Clemson will return to the course to finish the second round and play the third round on Tuesday.
