Clemson Notes:

  • The Tigers are coming off a 2-1 road win on Friday night at rival South Carolina to open the season.
  • Seniors Austen Burnikel and Aaron Jones recorded their first goals of the season on Friday evening.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Ximo Miralles started his first collegiate match, recording four saves.
  • Clemson is ranked No. 3 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Preseason Poll, No. 5 by Hero Sports, No. 6 by Soccer America, and No. 10 by Top Drawer Soccer. 
  • Head Coach Mike Noonan is now in his seventh season at the helm of the Tigers. Noonan was named the NSCAA’s Southeast Region and National Coach of the Year in 2015.

Providence Notes:

  • The Friars opened their season against Rhode Island, losing 2-1 in double overtime, the lone goal came from senior Julian Gressel.
  • Providence finished 8-7-3 overall and 4-4-1 in the Big East in 2015.
  • Last season the Friars fell in the Big East Conference Tournament Semifinals to Creighton, 2-1.
  • In 2014 Providence advanced to the College Cup, falling to UCLA 3-1 in double overtime.

Series Notes:

  • Sunday’s match will be the first meeting between the Tigers and Friars since 2014, a 2-1 overtime victory for Clemson at Providence.
