Clemson Has Strong Showing in Double-Dual Meet on Saturday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Clemson diving team competed in the one and three-meter events in double-dual meet competition against East Carolina and Richmond Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. The Tigers notched seven top-5 finishes with their performances in both events, the most of the young 2015-16 season. Calculated team scores for the meet:

1) Richmond def. Clemson (20-18)

2) Clemson def. East Carolina (25-13)

3) Richmond tied East Carolina (19-19)

Clemson’s two point loss to Richmond was the first suffered against the Spiders in the program’s history while the win against East Carolina was its first of the season, making the Tigers’ overall record 1-2 on the year. 

In the one-meter event, Megan Helwagen led a brigade of successive second through fifth-place finishers for Clemson after posting a score of 259.10. Freshmen Sarah Blank and Caylin Hirapara finished third and fourth registering season-best scores of 257.45 and 255.45, respectively. Sarah Braun rounded out the top five for the Tigers in the one-meter category with a score of 252.85.

Braun, Helwagen, and Hirapara also led Clemson in the three-meter category with finishes of third, fourth, and fifth place in the event. Braun and Helwagen’s scores of 279.90 and 279.80 were .10 and .20 points off from having both divers post NCAA Zone B qualifying scores in the first two competitions of the season, with the deciding score being 280. Hirapara’s 278.15 was a season-best score in the event as well, the second event of the double-dual meet in which she achieved such a mark.

Clemson’s next competition will split the team and send divers to compete in the Nike Cup in Chapel Hill, N.C. and the Georgia Tech Invite in Atlanta, Ga. in meets that will take place from Thursday, Nov. 19 – Saturday, Nov. 21.
