Clemson Golf Team To Participate In Hilton Head Invitational

Nov. 7, 2001

Clemson, SC – Head Coach Larry Penley and the Clemson golf team will travel to the Long Cove Golf Course in Hilton Head, SC, on November 9-11, to compete in the Hilton Head Invitational. Augusta State is the host school for the 15-team event.

Members of the team that will compete in this weekend’s tournament for the Tigers are freshmen Martin Catalioto and Jack Ferguson, sophomores Matt Hendrix and Gregg Jones, and junior D.J. Trahan. Trahan, who is currently ranked as the number-two collegiate golfer in the country by Sagarin and has won his last two tournaments, will lead the Tigers this weekend at Long Cove, a 7100-yard, par 72 course.

The golf team earned a third-place finish in the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate in October in its most recent event with a score of eight over par. D.J. Trahan had an impressive tournament shooting 70-68-67, completing the tournament eight under par and finishing with medalist honors.

The Tigers earned a fifth-place finish in last year’s Hilton Head Invitational with a team score of 16- under par. Former golfers Lucas Glover and John Engler both finished the tournament six under par to lead the team. As a freshman, Gregg Jones posted a two-under par finish, while sophomore D.J. Trahan recorded a score of two over par.

This will be the final event of the fall for the sixth-ranked Tigers. They will return to action February 24-26 in their first event of the spring 2002 season in Puerto Rico. The team will travel to Westin Rio Mar, Puerto Rico to compete in the Puerto Rico Classic. Former Clemson golfer, Lucas Glover won the tournament in 2001 with an 11-under par finish and led the team to a second-place finish.
