Clemson Golf Signs Three to National Letters of Intent

Clemson, SC – Alex Boyd, McCuen Elmore and Mike Soowal have all signed national letters of intent with the Clemson golf program, head coach Larry Penley announced on Friday. All three will enter Clemson as freshmen in August and join a roster that returns eight lettermen from the 2006-07 team.

Elmore was the 2006 SCJGA Jay Haas, Jr Player of the Year award winner. He was the Carolinas Golf Association Player of the Year and champion of the 2006 Players Championship. Additionally, the native of Cheraw, SC and graduate of Cheraw High School, was the individual medallist at the AA South Carolina State Championship in 2006 and 2007.

Boyd, a native of Augusta, GA and graduate of Richmond County High School, was the captain of that school’s AAA State Championship team last year. He was undefeated in match play at the 31st annual Georgia vs. South Carolina Challenge Match in 2006. He finished fifth at the GSGA State junior Championship in 2006 and was the Augusta Country Club Men’s Club champion in 2006.

Soowal is a two-time All-Pennsylvania first-team selection. He was a three-time league Player of the Year and was a four-time all-city selection. He advanced to match play in the 2004 United States Junior Amateur and also participated in the 2006 national junior tournament. Soowal played his high school golf in Pennsylvania, but his family now resides in Walhalla. His father, Jeff Soowal, was a three-year lettermen on the Clemson football team in the 1970s, including the sixth ranked Tiger team of 1978.
