Clemson Finishes Seventh at Insperity Augusta State Invitational

AUGUSTA, GA – Crawford Reeves shot his second consecutive round of 70 and led Clemson to a seventh-place finish at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational in Augusta, GA. Clemson finished with a team score of 880, 16 over par, the same score as the University of Houston. Texas, ranked sixth in the nation, won the event at 863.

The two-day 54-hole event was played at Forest Hills Country Club, a par 72 course. There were 15 teams in the field. 12 of whom were ranked in the top 50 in the nation entering the event.

Clemson had a 292 and 291 team score on Saturday when the 15 teams played 36 holes apiece. Clemson was the only team in the field to shoot four over par or better in each of the first two rounds. The Tigers finished with a nine over par 297 on Sunday.

Reeves had his second straight round of 70 thanks to a five under par 31 on the back nine. The senior from Greenville, SC was three over on the front nine, then made consecutive birdies on the 10th, 11th and 12th holes. He then birdied the 17th and 18th holes to finish with a two under par 70.

Reeves struggled in the first round with a 76, four over par, then had 11 birdies over the last two rounds. In fact he had five birdies on the back nine each of the last two rounds. He finished with a Clemson team best 12 birdies for the 54 holes. He finished in 13th place overall with his 216 score.

Clemson’s second best golfer on Sunday was freshman Cody Proveaux, who had a two over par 74. The reigning South Carolina amateur champion finished strong with an eagle on the par four 15th hole, then made birdies on the 17th and 18th holes. He finished with a 227 score for the 54 holes and finished 54th for the tournament.

Clemson’s second best golfer for the tournament was freshman Miller Capps. The native of Denver, NC finished 17th with a score of 218, two over par. He had an opening round 69, the best round by a Clemson golfer the entire weekend, then had a 73 in the second round. He finished with a 76 on Sunday. It was his third top 20 finish of the spring, tied with Reeves for the best on the Clemson team.

Stephen Behr, who was the low stroke average player on the Clemson team entering this tournament, had a 77 on Sunday and finished 33rd individually with a 222 score. He had an opening round 70. Billy Kennerly, playing his second event of the spring, finished with a 228 score, including a 77 on Sunday, and finished 57th in the field of 75 golfers.

Clemson will next be in action April 20-21 when it competes in the Wolfpack Spring Open, a 36-hole two-day tournament in Raleigh, NC.
