Nov. 5, 2000

HILTON HEAD, SC–Senior John Engler shot a 67, while classmate Lucas Glover added a 69 Sunday to lead Clemson to a 279 team round and a fifth-place tournament finish at the Rolex/Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Invitational. The event was held at the 72 and 6651-yard Arthur Hills Course on Hilton Head Island.

Georgia shot a tournament record 42-under-par score of 822 to defeat Georgia Tech by seven shots. Oklahoma State was third (834), while Texas was fourth at 843. Clemson was tied with New Mexico and and East Tennessee State for fifth at 848.

Individually, Anders Hultman of Oklahoma State shot a 63 in the final round and won the event by a shot over Bryce Molder of Georgia Tech. Hutlman shot a 63 on Sunday and finished at 195. He barely beat out Molder, who shot a 60 on Sunday, tying the all-time NCAA record for the lowest round in college golf history.

Engler and Glover each finished with 54-hole scores of 210, six-under-par and good enough for 12th place. Glover had rounds of 72-69-69 over the three days, while Engler had rounds of 71-72-67. For five tournaments this fall, Glover has taken 991 strokes and Engler 992. Both now have exactly 23 career rounds in the 60s.

Clemson made a comeback to finish fifth in the event by shooting the 279 on Sunday. Only Texas and its 278 score on Sunday, was a better. The Tigers finished at 848 overall for the event, 16 strokes under par as a team.

Freshman Gregg Jones supported the Tiger seniors. He posted rounds of 70-69 for the first two days, Clemson’s low man for the tournament after 36 holes. He fired a 75 on the final day, but still finished at 214, two-under-par, his best tournament as a Tiger.

Ben Duncan and D.J. Trahan both finished at 219 for the event. Duncan had three consecutive rounds of 73, while Trahan improved his performance by three shots each day, posting rounds of 76-73-70 for the three-day event.

Clemson will be in action next week for its final tournament of the fall. Larry Penley’s Tigers will compete in the Rolex Match Play Championship at West Bay Club in Estero, FL. It is the only match play event of the college season.
