Clemson Finishes 10th at 3M Augusta Invitational

Clemson, S.C.—Miller Capps had a two-under-par round of 70, the best by a Clemson golfer over the three rounds of the event, to lead Clemson to a 10th place  team finish at the 3M Augusta Invitational on Sunday.  Clemson finished with a team score of 867 to finish 10th in the 15 team field at the national event held at  par 72 Forest Hills Country Club in Augusta, Ga.

Clemson shot a 289 team score, one-over-par, for all three rounds to finish with a three-over-par team score for the two-day 54-hole tournament.  New Mexico won the tournament with an 838 score, while second-ranked Illinois was second at 841.  Georgia was third at 842, while third-ranked Texas was fourth at 844.

Clemson played the par three holes at even par over the three rounds, best in the field.  But the Tigers were 26 over par on the par four holes.   The Tigers were consistent for the weekend 13 of the 15 individual scores were between 70 and 73.  But no one had a score in the 60s.

Capps was Clemson’s top player with the 70 on Sunday and tied for team honors for the 54 holes with an even-par 216 score, good enough for No. 35 in the field of 78 golfers. Capps had 11 birdies for the three rounds, tied for the best among Clemson golfers.  He now has a team best 105 birdies for the year.

Classmate Stephen Behr also shot a 216 for the three rounds and tied for 35th.    He had rounds of 71-72-73 for a 72.0 average for the weekend, which matches his exact average for the year.

Billy Kennerly was Clemson’s third best performer for the weekend with a 217 score.  He shot even par 72 for each of the first two rounds, then shot a 73 on Sunday.

Cody Proveaux tied Capps for the most birdies over the weekend, but the junior had more bogeys than he is used to and finished with a 221 score for the 54 holes, good enough for 52nd place.  Carson Young shot one over par for 36 holes on Saturday, then shot a 78 on Sunday and finished in 58th place at 223.

Clemson will next be in action April 18-19 when the team plays at the Yale Spring Invitational in New Haven, Conn.
