Clemson Downs South Carolina 2-1 in Overtime

Columbia, SC – Dimelon Westfield scored two goals, including the game winner in the second overtime period, as fourth-ranked Clemson defeated ninth-ranked South Carolina 2-1 in men’s soccer action at Columbia on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers Andre Borges had an assist on both goals.

The Tigers improved to 7-1-1 this season, while South Carolina fell to 7-2-1. Clemson was ranked fourth by Soccer America and ninth by NSCAA entering the game, while South Carolina was ranked ninth by Soccer America and 11th by NSCAA.

Westfield has now scored 11 goals this season and he has scored in five straight matches. The senior from Morvant, Trinidad has nine goals in the last five matches.

Clemson now has a 7-0-1 record against the Gamecocks in the last eight meetings dating to the 1996 season. Head Coach Trevor Adair is 7-1-1 against South Carolina in his Clemson career. This was the 30th meeting overall between the two schools in soccer and Clemson has a 19-10-1 advantage.

Clemson scored first at the 31:13 mark as Westfield scored off a diagonal shot from 12 yards out into the right corner of the net. Westfield was assisted on the play by Borges and Fabio Tambosi. Tambosi passed the ball to Borges at the top of the box, who then sent the ball to Westfield on the left side, inside the box. Westfield chipped the ball into the right cornerof the net from there.

South Carolina tied the score at the 36:33 mark. J.C. Desriac passed the ball to Lawson Vaughn. Vaughn then laid the ball to Anthony Stovall on the right and he scored from 12 yards out, kicking the ball into the right wall of the net. This was Stovall’s second goal of the season, and just the seventh goal allowed by the Tigers all year.

Westfield scored the game winner at the 106:47 mark. Steven Rhyme took a shot from the edge of the box. The ball deflected off South Carolina’s goalkeeper Michael Bachmeyer and Andres Borges chased the ball down on the left side. Borges crossed the ball to Westfield near the right post and he headed the ball in from close range.

“Those were two good goals that Dimelon scored today,” said Clemson Head Coach Trevor Adair. “He had a great game and is playing with a lot of confidence. This was a game with two great programs playing. Like so many Clemson-South Carolina matches this was a classic.It was a great game for college soccer. “Andre Borges played an outstanding game and Nick Rivera played his heart out. He has a big heart and plays with a lot of desire. This was a great crowd for college soccer. Give South Carolina credit, they are a fine program and we were fortunate to come on the road and leave with a win.”

“It was an unbelievable feeling to score both goals,” said Westfield. “South Carolina is a good team and to score both goals against them gives me a lot of confidence.”
