CLEMSON, SC–Nathan Sturgis scored on a penalty kick in the first overtime period in giving Clemson a 1-0 win over Winthrop in a men’s intercollegiate soccer match at Clemson, SC Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Clemson improves to 6-4-2 overall, while Winthrop falls to 6-5-1 this season.

In the overtime period, Winthop’s Dustin Bybee fouled Dane Richards in the penalty box with 3:30 left in the first overtime period.

Sturgis converted on the penalty kick for his second goal of the season.

“At last we had an overtime game to go our way,” said Clemson Head Coach Dane Richards played with an injury and played with a lot of character. We are playing hard, but we are not playing in synch. One reason is we still have so many players out with injuries. The defense is keeping us in matches.”

Clemson will play host to ACC-foe Virginia Tech on Friday, October 21, at 7:00 p.m. in the Tigers’ next action.
