Clemson Defeats USC Upstate 3-0

CLEMSON, SC – Three different Clemson players scored goals while Connor Barbaree and Hassan Ibrahim both had two assists as Clemson defeated USC Upstate 3-0 in a men’s intercollegiate soccer match at Clemson, SC Friday night.

Clemson is now 7-8-2 overall and USC Upstate falls to 2-15-1 this season. This was the 10th meeting between the two schools on the soccer field. The Tigers now own a 9-0-1 advantage in the series.

Clemson scored at the 22:04 mark. Ibrahim threw the ball in to Connor Barbaree. Barbaree crossed the ball from the left. Nick Burton headed the ball into the right corner of the net for his third goal of the season.

On a reset, Connor Barbaree sent the ball in the box from the right center. John Tardy headed the ball and the Spartan’s goalkeeper Peter Davis made a save. However, Davis was not able to control the rebound and the ball went to his left. Barbaree knocked the ball in from close range for his first goal of the year.

Clemson scored its third goal in the 78th minute. Ibrahim sent the ball to Tommy Drake who fired a shot into the left corner of the net for his first goal of the season.

The Tigers outshot the Spartans tonight 25-10. The Tigers also had the advantage in corner kicks 7-4. Clemson’s Joseph Bendik had four saves in tonight’s match. The junior now has three solo shutouts and one shared shutout this season. He now has 85 saves on the year. The Tigers finished the week with two shutouts as the Tigers blanked Gardner-Webb, 1-0 on November 4.

This was the last home match for three Clemson seniors. The 2008 seniors include Bryson Moore, Bryson Moore has been a four-year starter for the Tigers as a defender. This year he has four assists. Nova is majoring in civil engineering. Brooks is the Tigers’ leading scorer in 2008 with six goals and one assist for 13 points.

“This was a good win for our seniors,” said Clemson Head Coach Connor Barbaree and Keegan Priest. Barbaree does not look like a freshman anymore. He’s going to have a great career. Keegan did a fine job tonight. Again, this win will help with our confidence going into the ACC Tournament.”

The Spartan’s goalkeeper Peter Davis finished the night with nine saves.

Clemson will participate in the ACC Tournament next week in Cary, NC. Pairings for the tournament will be announced on Monday morning.
