Clemson Defeats Marquette 5-2

Feb. 19, 2011

CLEMSON, SC – Clemson won five of the six singles matches in defeating Marquette 5-2 in a men’s intercollegiate tennis match at Clemson, SC Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Clemson improves to 10-2 overall, while Marquette falls to 5-4. The Tigers are ranked 51st in the latest ITA national poll.

Marquette won the doubles point when Dan Mamalat and Jose Carlos Guiterrez Crowley defeated Yannick Maden and Zachary Rigsby of Clemson 9-8 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

From this point, Clemson won the first three singles positions as Derek DiFazio and Kevin Galloway posted victories. Dominique Maden defeated Otavio Perim at number five singles, 7-6, 7-5 to clinch the match and give Clemson a 4-1 advantage in the match.

“I thought we came out flat and over-confident, and this cost us the doubles point,” said Clemson Head Coach Chuck McCuen. “I think we have good doubles teams. I think we have great chemistry with our teams, but today got our attention.

“I think Gerardo Meza had a great match today. He had a wonderful presence on the court. He played hard and was having fun. We have to learn to keep working hard and learn how to compete. We have to keep improving. I do think that we have a good team, but they have to believe and start enjoying competing. I’m glad we have this break. We can get rest after this stretch of 12 matches, and prepare for the tough ACC matches,” said McCuen.

Clemson will play host to Florida State on Friday, March 4 in the Tigers’ next action.
