Clemson Defeats Georgia 3-2 in Women’s Soccer

ATHENS, Ga. – Sarah Turner scored the game-winning goal in overtime in lifting 14th-ranked Clemson to a 3-2 overtime win over 25th-ranked Georgia in a women’s intercollegiate soccer match at Athens, GA Friday night.

A crowd of 3,062 fans attended the match, the second-most ever at a UGA home match. The loss was the Bulldogs first-ever in a season opener.

The Bulldogs (0-1) got on the board first as sophomore Tricia McKee netted a goal in the seventh minute off a cross from senior Beth Culver. Junior Ki VanOudenallen also had an assist on the goal.

Georgia controlled the ball early in the first half but the Lady Tigers (1-0) shifted the momentum with several scoring chances. Clemson outshot the Bulldogs nine to seven in the half, but Georgia held onto the 1-0 lead at halftime.

Clemson maintained momentum at the start of the second half with several strong attacks, capitalizing at the 57:08 mark with a goal from senior Heather Beem, assisted by freshman Allison Graham. Georgia, however, would retake the lead moments later as McKee scored her second goal of the match at the 57:29 mark off a cross from freshman Geneil Newbern.

The Lady Tigers tied the game again in the 61st minute on a goal from senior Rachel Gallegos, assisted by senior Deliah Arrington. Regulation ended with a 2-2 tie. Clemson outshot Georgia 10-3 in the second half.

Just over three minutes into sudden victory overtime, Clemson sophomore Sarah Turner scored the game-winning goal, assisted by junior Lindsay Browne.

The Lady Tigers held a 20-10 shot advantage in the game. Clemson goalkeeper Leigh Ann Harrison recorded three saves. Georgia goalkeeper Ashley Lindley recorded 12 saves, the most in her Georgia career.
