Feb. 18, 2011

CLEMSON, SC – Yannick Maden defeated Sawyer Duncan of Furman 6-4, 6-1 at number-one singles in leading the Tigers to a 7-0 win over the Paladins in a men’s intercollegiate tennis match at Clemson, SC Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Tigers improve to 9-2 this season. Furman falls to 0-8 this year. The Tigers are ranked 51st in the latest ITA poll.

Maden is now 3-1 this year at number one singles. Freshman Gerardo Meza of Clemson is now 7-2 in dual matches this year as he defeated Robbie Aru of Furman 6-3, 6-0 at number four singles.

Clemson will play host to Marquette tomorrow afternoon (February 19) at 2:00 p.m. in the Tigers’ next action.

“This was a solid start to our outdoor season,” said Clemson Head Coach Chuck McCuen. “It was great to have to deal with the wind and normal conditions that outdoor tennis brings. With the exception of #3 doubles, we buckled down and competed very well.”

Today’s match marked the 94th meeting between the two schools in men’s tennis. The series started in 1923. Clemson won their 75th match in the series today and now hold a 75-18-1 advantage in the overall ledger.
