Clemson defeats Furman 2-1

CLEMSON, SC–Dane Richards scored with 11:15 left to go in regulation in leading Clemson to a 2-1 win over Furman in a men’s intercollegiate soccer match at Clemson, SC Wednesday night.

With the win, Clemson improves to 9-4-3 overall, while Furman falls to 7-7-4 this season.

Clemson scored first with one minute left in the first half. Mark Buchholz scored his fifth goal of the season with an assist by Nathan Sturgis. Buchholz has scored four goals in the last three games.

Furman tied the score at the 63:39 mark. Kevin Norman passed the ball to Josh Villalobos who sent a long ball to Dominic Cianciarulo. Cianciarulo scored from eight yards out for his fifth goal of the year.

Richards scored the game-winner after Hector Quintanar headed the ball to him from close range. Richards rifled a shot into the net from eight yards out for his team-leading sixth goal of the year.

Clemson Head Coach Trevor Adair was not on the Tigers’ sidelines tonight. Adair returned to his native country of Ireland because of illness in his family.

“This was a big win for us,” said Richards. “We wanted to win the game for Coach Adair and his family. I was happy to be able to score the goal that put us ahead. Hector headed the ball to me and I was at the right place at the right time.”

“We want to remember Coach Adair and his family at this time,” said Clemson’s Assistant Coach Mark Buchholz continues to play well for us. Dane scored a great goal to put us ahead. This was a big game and Furman came to play. We will continue to work hard and prepare for Duke.”

Clemson will play at Duke in the regular season finale on Saturday, at 7:00 p.m. in Durham, NC.
