Clemson Defeats Furman 2-0 In Women’s Soccer

Oct. 9, 2001

Greenville, SC – Katie Carson tied the ACC career record for solo shutouts and Lindsay Browne and Cindy Mullinix each scored goals as seventh-ranked Clemson defeated Furman 2-0 in women’s soccer action at Eugene Stone Stadium in Greenville on Wednesday night. With their fifth straight win, the Lady Tigers improve to 8-1 on the season. Furman, who is ranked eighth in Southeast Region by the NSCAA, falls to 7-4-1.

Clemson struck first at the 10:23 mark of the match when freshman Paige Ledford pushed a pass down the sideline to Tricia Williams who then dribbled to the endline and sent a crossing pass to Browne. Browne gathered the pass and quickly angled a shot from the near post that deflected off a Lady Paladin defender and went into the goal. The goal was her team leading sixth of the year for Browne.

The score remained 1-0 until late in the game when junior Cindy Mullinix took a pass from Ledford and blasted a shot from 15 yards out that pierced the top left corner of the net. The goal was the first of the season for Mullinix who was playing in her only her third game of the season after suffering a broken leg over the summer.

Heather Beem, who is recovering from a knee injury, and Deliah Arrington, who suffered a concussion in last Friday’s game against Duke, both sat out the match for the Tigers.

“Furman is a very good team and I really admire the way the play the game,” said Clemson Head Coach Todd Bramble. “They play a very attractive style of soccer but I keep telling my team that if the other team keeps putting up zeros on the scoreboard, then we are going to keep winning. I am very pleased with the way we played and we are going to have keep playing well during the tough stretch of ACC games we have coming up.”

The Lady Tigers will next be in action on Saturday, October 9 at when they travel to College Park to take on the University of Maryland in a match scheduled for 7:00PM.
