Clemson defeats Appalachian State 4-0

CLEMSON, SC-Senior forward Steven Rhyne scored two goals in leading Clemson to a 4-0 win over Appalachian State in a men’s intercollegiate soccer match at Clemson, SC Wednesday night.

Clemson improves to 7-4 overall, while Appalachian State falls to 6-6 this season.

Clemson scored first at the 16:39 mark as Charlie Roberts scored his first goal of the season. Bradley Gibson served a corner kick from the right. Roberts headed the ball in from six yards out.

The Tigers scored again at the 27:34 point. Steven Rhyne converted a penalty kick after he was brought down in the penalty box to make the score 2-0.

Rhyne scored again for the Tigers with 58:16 gone in the match. Rhyne, after making a steal, fired a 16-yard shot into the middle of the goal.

Stuart Holden made the score 4-0 when he fired a 18-yard shot near the left post for his second goal of the year.

“This was a great win for us tonight as it allowed us to get back on track,” said Clemson Head Coach Charlie Roberts back as he helps us up front and gives of more options. We have Virginia coming to Clemson on Sunday and this will be a big test for us. If we can continue to play well and stay healthy, this team can still compete for championships. The guys were hungry for a win tonight, and we took care of business and didn’t allow Appalachian State to get in a rhythm.”

Clemson will play host to Virginia on Sunday afternoon at Riggs Field at 2:00 p.m. in the Tigers’ next action.
