CLEMSON, SC–Freshman Nuria Zufia scored early in the first half as Clemson defeated Alabama-Birmingham 1-0 in a women’s intercollegiate soccer match at Clemson, SC Friday night.

This was the first match of the season for both teams.

Zufia collected the ball after a miss clearance by a UAB defender and sent an 11-yard shot into the goal.

Clemson will play host to Tennessee Tech Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Lady Tigers’ next action.

“UAB was a tough team and they make you fight for everything,” said Head Coach Todd Bramble. “I was happy for the win, and the shutout. We must learn to finish our chances. We created some golden opportunities that we should have put away. It’s good to have a tough game like this and this helps us prepare for the rest of the season. I think the players coming off the bench did a great job, and I thought we showed great depth in tonight’s match. It was good to see Nuria score her first career goal in the match.”
