Clemson Concludes First Day of Competition at ACC Indoor Championships

Blacksburg, VA – Clemson completed day one of competition at the ACC Indoor Championships on Thursday. Four of the seven heptathlon events took place on the first day. Tiger junior Ryan Koontz holds a slim lead with 3,120 points, while senior Brent Hobbs is second in the standings with 3,117 points. Red-shirt freshman Mike Feathers is fourth after the first day with 2,824 points.

In the 60m dash, Hobbs ran a season-best 7.14 while Koontz was third overall at 7.17. Feathers clocked a 7.47 to finish 10th out of 15 competitors.

Hobbs gained the lead in the heptathlon thanks to fine performances in the long jump and shot put. In the long jump, he had the top mark among the 15 competitors and season-best mark at 23’4.5″. Koontz was second overall in that event with a leap of 23’0″, while Feathers came in at 20’6.5″. In the shot put, the Tigers took the first three spots overall. Hobbs had the top toss at 44’6.25″, while Feathers hit a career-best mark of 43’10.75″. Koontz was third overall with a toss of 43’9″, which was also a season-best for him.

Koontz made his move in the final event of the day, the high jump. After clearing 6’6.25″ and tallying 794 points, he moved into first place after day one of the competition. Feathers and Hobbs cleared season bests of 6’5″ and 6’4″, respectively.

The heptathlon will resume Friday with the final three events, the 60m hurdles, pole vault, and 1000m run. The running events and field events for the ACC Indoor Championships will begin at 1:00 PM with the long jump and weight throw.
