Last Week’s Game Notes & RecapsClemson, ranked as high as #14 in the nation, went 0-1 in its only game of the week. Maryland defeated #14 Clemson 7-2 on Saturday, then game-two of the series was rained out.

In game-one on May 4, Jimmy Reed struck out 11 and allowed just two runs on four hits in 8.0 innings pitched to lead Maryland to a 7-2 win over Clemson. Maryland scored three runs in the second inning and never looked back. Shane Kennedy hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to cut the Terrapins’ lead to 5-2, but Maryland scored two runs in the sixth inning to put the game away. Kyle Convissar went 3-for-4 with a homer to lead the Terrapins, who totaled 14 hits in the contest. Jay Baum had a team-high two hits to lead Clemson, who had four hits.

2013 Season NotesClemson has a 30-15 overall record and 15-10 ACC mark on the season. The Tigers will enter Monday’s doubleheader against Maryland 1.5 games behind Florida State (16-8) and one game behind N.C. State (15-8) in the ACC Atlantic Division standings. Florida State will travel to Raleigh, NC to face N.C. State next weekend. North Carolina leads the overall ACC standings with a 19-3 mark, while the Tigers are in fifth place in the overall ACC standings.

The Tigers, who are averaging 5.2 runs per game, are hitting .273 with a .355 slugging percentage and .351 on-base percentage thanks to 180 walks and 16 hit-by-pitches. The team has totaled 63 doubles, 11 triples, 14 homers, and 71 stolen bases. Clemson has outscored its opposition in each of the nine innings and in extra innings in 2013 as well.

Tyler Slaton is hitting a team-best .310 with a .388 on-base percentage. Garrett Boulware is hitting .307 with seven doubles, one triple, seven homers, and 37 RBIs, as he leads the team in homers and RBIs. Kennedy is batting .299 with a .396 on-base percentage as well.

The pitching staff has a 3.08 ERA and .262 opponents’ batting average in 409.0 innings pitched this season. It has allowed 411 hits and 141 walks with 292 strikeouts, good for a 2.07 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Freshman lefty Matthew Crownover is 5-1 with a 2.40 ERA in 48.2 innings pitched over11 appearances (10 starts). In ACC games, Crownover is 2-1 with a 1.73 ERA in five starts. Sophomore righthander Daniel Gossett is 7-3 with a 2.48 ERA and 68 strikeouts in a team-high 72.2 innings pitched.

Senior righty Scott Firth has a 5-4 record and 2.58 ERA in 14 appearances (six starts). In his eight relief appearances since moving to the bullpen, he is 3-0 with three saves and has allowed just 10 hits (.179 opponents’ batting average), one unearned run, and six walks with 10 strikeouts. Sophomore righthander Patrick Andrews has a 2.35 ERA and a .183 opponents’ batting average in 23.0 innings pitched over 13 appearances (one start). Kyle Schnell has a team-best 2.25 ERA in 24.0 innings pitched over 17 relief appearances as well.

The Tigers will play seven games during the upcoming week, including six games at home and five games against Southern Conference teams. The Tigers will conclude the Maryland series with a doubleheader on Monday, then Clemson will play Furman twice in a home-and-home midweek series. Tuesday night’s game will be at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, while the two teams will play at Fluor Field in Greenville on Wednesday night. Then over the weekend, Clemson will host Georgia Southern in a three-game series.
