Clemson Baseball Edges Georgia Tech, 6-5

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson Tigers held on to defeat Georgia Tech 6-5 Sunday afternoon at Tiger Field. Clemson (27-17, 8-6 ACC) completed a three-game sweep of Georgia Tech (29-15, 9-9 ACC). The 43 runs tied for the most scored by a Tiger team in a series against an ACC team since the league began playing three-game series at the same site in 1990. The Tigers scored 43 runs at NC State in a three-game series in 1995.

Clemson, who has won eight of its last nine games, opened the game scoring the first four batters it sent to the plate. Henri Stanley led off the inning with a walk, Patrick Boyd reached base on an error, and Kurt Bultmann hit an RBI single scoring Stanley. Jason Harris followed with a walk and Khalil Greene and Derek Borgert added RBIs for the Tigers.

The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the third inning. Brad Stockton led off the inning with a double and later scored on a home run by Mark Teixeira. Tech scored again in the fifth inning on a single by Matthew Boggs and an RBI single by Derik Goffena. Goffena was 3-for-5 and Eric McQueen added three hits to lead the Yellow Jackets’ 14-hit attack.

Clemson scored insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings that proved pivotal. In the seventh, an RBI single by Bultmann scored Boyd. Bultmann finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with two RBIs. In the eighth, Tiger catcher Brian Ellis singled and scored on a single by Stanley.

Georgia Tech rallied in the ninth, putting runners on second and third with one out. Stephen Donaghey’s sacrifice fly brought the Yellow Jackets to within one run, but Jason Basil grounded out to shortstop with Goffena on second to end the game.

Junior Matt Additon (4-2) earned the win in his first career start for the Tigers. He pitched 5.2 innings allowing eight hits and three runs. Prior to the start, the right-hander from Turner, Maine had 62 career relief appearances, sixth best in Tiger history. Senior Chris Heck picked up his first save as a Tiger by allowing just one earned run in 2.2 innings. Junior Simon Young (7-4) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets. Young walked the only batter he faced before having to leave with an injury.

Clemson will be off for the next five days as the players will be taking their spring semester exams. The Tigers will return to action on Saturday, May 1 in a doubleheader with Virginia beginning at 12:15 p.m. at Tiger Field.
