Clemson advances to Final Eight of NCAA Tournament

STANFORD, CA–Clemson and Stanford played to a 0-0 tie, but Clemson won the penalty kick round 4-2 and advanced to the Final Eight in the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament at Stanford, CA late Friday night.

This marked the third straight NCAA Tournament match that the Lady Tigers have tied and advanced by winning the penalty kick round. Clemson has scored one goal in the three NCAA Tournament matches this season. Clemson tied Vanderbilt (1-1) in the first round, Oklahoma State (0-0) in the second round, and the Cardinal (0-0) in the Round of 16.

Clemson is now 11-7-5 overall, while Stanford finishes the season with a 15-6-2 record this season. Tonight’s match goes down in the record book as a tie. Clemson is unbeaten in nine of its last 10 matches.

This will also be the fourth NCAA Final Eight appearance for the Lady Tigers in school history. Clemson has previously played in the NCAA Final Eight in 1997, 1999, and 2000.

Stanford outshot the Lady Tigers 18-3 in the match, but the Lady Tigers’ Ashley Phillips was solid in goal for Clemson as she had seven saves. This was Phillips’ ninth solo shutout of the season. She now has 114 saves this season and broke the Clemson record tonight for most saves in a single season. She also moved into second place on the Clemson career list for most saves as she now has 233.
