Carl McHugh – A Clemson Man

Carl McHugh, great uncle of current Clemson men’s tennis coach Chuck McCuen, was named head coach of the swimming and diving team in 1947. He was at the helm of the program for 28 years before his retirement in 1976.

McHugh graduated from Clemson in 1936 with a degree in engineering. He spent six years in the private business sector before returning to Clemson to coach and work as an associate professor in the engineering department.
