Brito and van Adrichem Advance To Championship Match In Furman Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, SC – Clemson women’s tennis players Maria Brito and Federica van Adrichem advanced to the championship matches of their respective flights with wins on Saturday in the second round of the Furman Fall Classic. In the doubles draw, both Tiger teams won matches on Saturday to place third at flight one and flight three.

Daniela Alvarez and van Adrichem defeated Penn State’s team of Abraham and Shular, 8-2, in the flight one doubles consolation final, while the Tiger tandem of Brito and Carol Salge won an 8-3 decision over Jones and Orlin of Tennessee. Both Clemson teams finished the weekend with a 2-1 overall record.

At flight two in the singles bracket, van Adrichem defeated Lauren Osborne of Furman by a score of 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 and will face South Carolina’s Gira Scholfield in the finals at 9:00 AM on Sunday. Brito won her match at No. 2 against Ghizela Schutte of Tennessee, 7-6(6), 6-3 and will meet Natasa Vuckovic from South Carolina in the flight championships.

Salge and Kathi Gerber will compete for third-place in the flight four singles and flight six singles championships, respectively. Salge fell to Furman’s Shannon Moore on Saturday, 7-5, 0-6, 6-1, while Gerber was defeated by Furman’s Jacqueline Eckert, 6-4, 7-6(4).

Alvarez dropped her flight one singles contest by a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 to Laura Gioia of Furman. She will face South Carolina’s Laura Ganzer on the final day of competition. Clemson’s Gabrielle Solek-Tefft also suffered her second defeat of the weekend in the flight seven singles bracket, falling to Dorothy Dohanies of Penn State, 6-0, 6-0.

Sunday’s singles matches will begin at 9:00 AM on Sunday at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, SC.
