CLEMSON, S.C – Liberty scored six runs in the seventh inning to build a seven-run lead and held on to defeat Clemson 11-8 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Liberty improved to 4-1 while Clemson fell to 5-6.

Righthander Darren Adams (2-0), who transferred from Clemson a season ago and is the twin brother of Tiger lefthander Brian Adams, pitched 6.0 innings and allowed five hits and four runs to earn the victory in his first career start. Starter Ryan Mottl (1-1) allowed eight runs and nine hits in 6.0 innings pitched to take the loss.

Steve Baker led the Flames with two hits and three RBIs. Anthony Pennix also had two hits, one of which was a two-run triple in the breakout seventh inning. Clemson rallied with three runs in the seventh and one in the ninth but fell short for the sixth time in seven games.

In game two, Kurt Bultmann hit two doubles, a triple, and had two RBIs as the Tigers stopped their three-game skid with an 11-6 win over Liberty. Bultmann had five hits in the two games.

Freshman lefty Thomas Boozer provided some much needed solid pitching, as he pitched a career-high 7.1 innings allowing just one earned run along with seven hits and three walks. Kurt Reese (0-2) took the loss for the Flames. The Tigers improved to 6-6 while the Flames fell to 4-2.

Bradley LeCroy, who subbed for an injured Doug Roper in the top of the first inning, gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead in the second inning on a bases clearing double to right center. Tiger shortstops (Doug Roper and LeCroy) were one for their last 20 at the plate before LeCroy’s double.

Clemson, who had seven extra base hits in the game, blew the game open in the sixth inning with five runs highlighted by Kurt Bultmann’s two-run double to left center. Patrick Boyd, Khalil Greene, and Justin Singleton also had RBI hits in the inning.

Clemson will play host to Coastal Carolina on Tuesday (Mar. 9) and Wednesday (Mar. 10). Both games will start at 3:00 PM.
