March 20, 2000

TUCSON, Ariz. – Clemson has been ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division I baseball poll after a shakeup took place in the top 10. Florida St., which had been ranked No. 1 the previous five weeks, slipped to third after losing two of three against Wake Forest. North Carolina, which was 21-0 entering an Atlantic Coast Conference series at Georgia Tech. this past weekend, lost all three and slipped from second to seventh this week.

Clemson (19-3 overall and 3-0 in the ACC), swept Maryland three straight over the past weekend and has won 8 of its last 9 games. The key to the Tigers’ success this season has been the pitching rotation of Scott Berney, Ryan Mottl and Jarrod Schmidt, all righthanders. They have a combined record of 13-0 with a 1.13 ERA in 111 2/3 innings. The trio has held opponents to a cumulative batting average below .200.
