Arizona State Stops Men’s Tennis

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State downed Clemson Friday afternoon 5-2 at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe. The victory improved the Sun Devils record to 5-7, while dropping the Tigers to 15-7.

In Doubles action, Clemson pulled off two victories in order to earn the first point of the afternoon. The Sun Devils’ No. 1 duo of Chris Stewart (Sr., Adelaide, Australia) and Andy Colombo (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) upended the pair of Nathan Thompson and Jarmaine Jenkins, 8-6, to earn the victory.

The Tigers clinched the doubles point with victories from the No. 2 and No. 3 duos respectively. The No. 2 pair of Damiisa Robinson pulled off an, 8-3, victory over ASU’s Clinton Letcher (Jr., Melbourne, Australia) and Jonathan Kinsella (So., Astley, England), while the Tigers’ No. 3 pair of Goran Sterijovski and Ryan Young defeated the Devils’ Ryan McBride (So., Tempe, Ariz.) and Daniel Davies (Fr., Sydney, Australia), 8-1.

The Sun Devils were able to rebound in singles play, as they won five of the six matches to clinch the victory. Colombo, playing in the No. 2 singles position for the Sun Devils, overcame Jenkins in straight sets, 6-4,7-6 (3) to earn the point for ASU, while in the No. 3 spot, Letcher downed Sterijovski, 7-6(7),6-3. Playing in the No. 4 spot on the afternoon for ASU, Kinsella bounced back from a first set loss to earn a hard-fought three set match, 4-6, 6-3,6-4,over Boetsch. To clinch the victory for the Sun Devils, McBride playing in the No. 6 spot defeated the Tigers’ Young, 6-3,7-6(8).

Christopher Biro (Fr., Adelaide, Australia) was able to pull off the final victory for the Sun Devils at No. 5 singles with a 6-7, 7-6,10-2 win over Robinson to round out the day. Since the team match had already been decided, the third set at No. 5 singles was decided with a ten-point tiebreaker.

The Tigers lone singles victory came at the No. 1 spot where the Tigers’ Thompson overcame the Sun Devils’ Stewart in a three set match, 3-6, 6-3,7-5.
