CLEMSON, SC – #24 Clemson defeated Georgia Tech 4-1 in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s tennis match at Clemson, SC Friday evening. The match was played indoors due to inclement weather.Clemson has a 17-5 record overall and a 6-3 mark in the ACC. This is the first year that the Tigers have won six conference matches in a single season since the 2007 campaign. The Tigers are ranked 24th nationally according to the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. Georgia Tech falls to 8-15 overall, and 1-9 in league play.Clemson started the match by winning the doubles point. At number-one doubles, the #15 Clemson doubles team of Yannick Maden and Dominique Maden was an upset winner over the #8 doubles team of Vikram Hundal and Juan Spir by an 8-5 score.Georgia Tech tied the match as Nathan Rakitt defeated Clemson’s Gerardo Meza 6-4, 6-1 at number-singles. From this point, the Tigers won the next three singles matches.At number-one singles, #24 Yannick Maden defeated #45 Juan Spir 6-4, 6-3 to give Clemson a 2-1 advantage. Maden now has a 23-7 record in singles this season. He is 17-4 in dual matches and is also 6-3 in conference contests.Hunter Harrington of Clemson defeated his opponent Juan Melian at number-two singles 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Harrington is now 19-8 overall and 15-5 in dual matches.Zachary Rigsby clinched the match for the Tigers with his 7-6, 6-1 win over Eduardo Segura at number-five singles.”It felt good out there today,” said Clemson’s Yannick Maden. “We won the doubles point and that is always a positive as this gives you a lot of confidence going into singles. We were very happy to get the win at number-one doubles as well. We must now get ready for a very good Wake Forest team.””First of all, I want to give a lot of credit to my Assistant Coach John Boetsch,” said Clemson Head Coach Chuck McCuen. “I know the players execute and they are the ones that play the matches, but Coach Boetsch motivates our players and studies the opponents and has our players ready to play.””I am very happy to get an ACC win. This is a tennis conference and when you can come out on top, it’s always a great win. Our doubles continue to improve, and our players understand that it’s very important to win the doubles point. I have a lot of respect for Georgia Tech and their program.”We must get ready for a good Wake Forest team as they come to play us Sunday.”Clemson will play host to Wake Forest on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. noon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
