2008-09 Women’s Tennis Schedule Announced

CLEMSON, SC – The 2008-09 Clemson women’s tennis schedule has been announced by Head Coach Nancy Harris. The Tigers will participate in six fall individual tournaments before facing another tough slate during the championships spring season.

Clemson will open the 2008 fall season at the MCC Collegiate Clay Courts in Montgomery, AL over the Sept. 12-14 weekend. The Tigers will then participate in the Furman Fall Classic, a staple of the fall schedule under Harris, from Sept. 26-28. The entire Clemson team will not make the short trip to Greenville, however, as those earning invitations will begin competition at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, CA on Sept. 27. The annual ITA Southeast Regional will be held in Winston-Salem, NC this year with opening-round action beginning Oct. 22, while the Tigers will make their second straight trip to the Doral Duals In The Desert Tournament from Oct. 31 – Nov. 2.

The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships will be played from Nov. 6-9 in Charlottesville, VA. Tiger junior Ani Mijacika will be expected to earn a bid to the event while all players will have the opportunity to secure an invitation throughout the fall tournament schedule.

Clemson will open the spring season on Jan. 23 at home against the College of Charleston. The Tigers will then travel to Richmond, VA for a date with Virginia Commonwealth, one of 13 teams on their 2009 slate that played in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

Beginning Jan. 31, the team will play host to the first and second rounds of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, as the tournament enters its first year under a new format. Clemson will face Boise State in the opening match while Auburn and Louisville complete the field. The winner of the four-team bracket will advance to the round of 16 to be played in Madison, WI on Feb. 13.

Following the opening rounds of the Team Indoors, the Tigers will take on non-conference opponents Furman and Georgia at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on Feb. 5 and Feb. 7, respectively. Clemson will also welcome in-state rival South Carolina to town for a match on Feb. 22 before opening the ACC schedule at home against Georgia Tech on Feb. 25.

The Tigers will travel to Lexington, KY on Mar. 1 for a contest against Kentucky before returning home to match up against Miami on Mar. 8. Clemson will then head south to take on Florida State in Tallahassee on Mar. 15 and Central Florida in Orlando the following day. Conference foes Virginia and Virginia Tech will make the trip to Tigertown for the Mar. 21-22 weekend, while the Tigers will face NC State and Wake Forest on the road to close out the month of March.

Clemson will play host to Maryland and Boston College on the final homestead of the 2009 season and will then wrap up the regular season with dates at Duke and North Carolina.

The 2009 ACC Championships will begin on Apr. 16 at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, NC, while NCAA Tournament play will begin on May 9 at various campus sites. The NCAA Championships Final 16 and individual tournaments will be held in College Station, TX from May 15-25.
