17th-Ranked Women’s Tennis Upset By #51 Virginia Commonwealth On Saturday

CLEMSON, SC – The 17th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team was upset by #51 Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. The loss dropped the Tigers to 1-1 in the young season, while the Rams remained undefeated at 7-0. Sophomore Carol Sagle won both her singles and doubles match-ups for Clemson in the losing effort.

Virginia Commonwealth claimed two doubles matches for a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. The Rams’ 17th-ranked duo of Olga Borisova and Marianna Yuferova defeated Clemson’s team of Daniela Alvarez and Federica van Adrichem, ranked #19, at the top doubles position by a score of 8-4. At flight two, Tigers Maria Brito and Kathi Gerber fell to Tatsiana Uvarova and Vera Petrashevitch of VCU, 8-5, while Clemson’s tandem of Carol Salge and Marie Scriba claimed an 8-5 victory over Viktoria Konstantinova and Camille Ripert at the flight three spot.

Salge was also a winner in singles action, as she defeated Konstantinova at flight three, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. At the number one singles position, Uvarova won over Alvarez by a 6-4, 7-5 margin, while Yuferova overcame a first-set loss to the Tigers’ Brito, winning the second and third sets (6-3, 6-0) to claim the match at flight two. Clemson’s Van Adrichem, ranked #41, fell to Borisova in the flight four match-up, 6-3, 6-4, and Scriba was defeated by the Rams’ Petrashevitch at number five, 6-2, 6-4. At the flight six position, Gabrielle De Beaucoudrey edged Clemson’s Gerber by a score of 7-6(5), 5-10, 10-2.

The Tigers return to action next weekend when they will play host to the Tribe of William & Mary. Sunday’s action will begin at 12:00 PM at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
