#14 Tigers Upset #13 Tar Heels, 5-2, On Saturday

CLEMSON, SC – The 14th-ranked Tigers posted their 16th victory of the season with a 5-2 win over #13 North Carolina in women’s tennis action on Saturday. Clemson also improved to 7-2 against ACC opponents, while the Tar Heels fell to 19-7 overall and 7-2 in the conference.

Clemson’s doubles team of Julie Coin and Alix Lacelarie, ranked #53 in the ITA poll, clinched the doubles point for the Tigers with an 8-5 upset over North Carolina’s sixth-ranked team of Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline. The duo took an early 4-0 lead and never trailed in the flight one doubles match. Romy Farah and Carol Salge joined forces for just the second time this season to defeat Caitlin Collins and Tanja Markovic, 8-3, in the flight three contest. At flight two doubles, Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito won the first game against Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long, but the 24th-ranked Tar Heel team proved to be too much, winning the match, 8-5.

The Tigers then won four singles matches for the 5-2 victory. Coin, ranked #2, was dominate over #31 Mojzis at flight one, 6-0, 6-4. She improved to 30-3 overall and 8-1 in the ACC. At flight two, #80 Farah posted a two-set upset over 22nd-ranked Cline, 6-3, 6-4. She is undefeated in ACC action at 9-0 and boasts a 22-10 overall record. North Carolina took the flight three and flight four singles contests as Lacelarie fell to Long, 6-4, 6-3, and Anundsen outlasted Brito, 6-7(5), 6-4, 1-0 (10-6), respectively. Alvarez clinched the victory for the Tigers with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Collins at flight five, and Salge easily won her match at flight six against Charlotte Tansill, 6-0, 6-3.

Clemson faces #16 Duke on Sunday at 2:30 PM at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center in the final regular match of the 2005 season. The Tigers will honor seniors Julie Coin, Alix Lacelarie, Richele LeSaldo and Ioana Paun prior to the match.
